From the bitter cold comes kindness and coats

CommonGround_2012-27I posted here yesterday about how pathetic it was that the Shelby County Schools would close because of freezing temperatures. (Pathetic because it’s a sad, societal acknowledgment of how many children’s basic needs aren’t being met.)  Not long after, I heard from a friend, who lives in Rochester, NY, where they know from cold.

She wanted to start some sort of winter coat drive up there for the folks down here. And then another friend (I won’t name her, because she might be embarrassed by the attention) saw my post and contacted me to figure out how to start a local coat drive.

So now it looks like some of the kids who didn’t go to school today may be a bit warmer on their journey to school the rest of the winter. Stay tuned for more details on where/when/how to help.
