How the bitter cold warms hearts: Details on coat drives

IMG_1673The upshot of yesterday’s post (read it here) is that there are now (at least) two coat drives for Shelby County Schools kids who need warm winter gear.
First: Action News 5 WCM-TV (hey Ursula!) is partnering with Common Ground for a coat drive thrown together so quickly it doesn’t have a catchy name or anything. (Lovers of alliteration, help me out.) You can drop off new or gently used coats between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday-Friday at the YWCA office, 766 S. Highland.   If you want to make a donation, you can do so here: Go to the Donate page, check the “Common Ground” box and put “coat drive” in the comment field.

Then there’s this coat drive, coordinated by former Memphis TV reporter and all-around amazing woman Tran Bui Smith who now lives in Rochester, NY. She saw my blog post, we inboxed a little and she activated her Little Helpers group. They’ve got other drop-off sites taking coats through the end of January – check them out on Facebook. (Motto: Children helping children. *tear)

So now it looks like some of the kids who didn’t go to school today may be a bit warmer on their journey to school the rest of the winter. I’m having all the feelings, so I’ll stop here. Stay tuned for updates on how donations are going.
